Hoopoe Haven Guest House is a peaceful, family-run guest house in Chartwell, offering a relaxed country atmosphere just minutes from Fourways and Sandton. Set on two acres of tranquil gardens, we provide comfortable accommodation for both business and leisure travellers.
Our Story
Hoopoe Haven Guest House was founded by Alan and Christine Jones, who arrived in South Africa from Rhodesia in 1981 after the war, together with their two daughters. Starting over was not easy — they managed to gather just enough for a deposit on a modest property with an old house in the rural area of Chartwell.
Alan worked in IT while Christine dedicated herself to raising their family and creating a warm home. Over the years, they lovingly developed the property — planting trees, encouraging birdlife, and gradually transforming the land into the peaceful haven it is today.
As Alan approached retirement, the family decided to subdivide part of the property and build a house to sell. When the sale didn’t happen as planned, they saw an opportunity instead. Rather than selling, they opened a guest house — and Hoopoe Haven Guest House was born. Inspired by the abundant birdlife on the property, each room and unit was named after different birds found in the area.
In 2013, their daughter Tracey stepped in to manage the guest house, and today she runs it with the support of her husband and a dedicated team. Alan remains involved behind the scenes, offering valuable guidance and managing the accounts.

What began as a small country getaway has grown into a welcoming lodge that hosts both corporate travelers during the week and families or groups looking for a relaxing weekend escape.
Over the years, we have expanded our accommodation options, improved our facilities, and continued to shape the lodge into a warm, comfortable, and nature-rich destination — while preserving the relaxed farm-style charm that guests love.

It’s not unusual to see sheep, cows, springbuck and even an emu roaming nearby – a refreshing reminder that you’re still close to nature.
